OFF THE TOP ROPE
An off-the-rails single-camera workplace COMEDY, based on a somewhat true story. WWE meets 30 Rock, The Office
LOGLINE: A workplace comedy that pulls back the curtain on the second-best professional wrestling promotion on television.
SUMMARY: Failed screenwriter, Shane Price, has been cast out of Hollywood, told he’d never “work in this town again”. But never say never, he’s got talent, and he’s working on his comeback, but unfinished screenplays don’t pay the bills. Shane’s landed a gig as producer and head writer of a failing pro wrestling company – Golden Ring Wrestling. Shackled by an unspoken agreement with GRW owner and ex-wrestler Mick Apple, Shane’s less of an asset and more of a carnival barker with no creative input. Speaking of Apple, he’s got a bad attitude, a complete lack of people skills, and controls GRW with an iron fist. To him, “wrasslin” works best with – generic storylines, good-guys versus bad, and over-the-top gimmicks. But his outdated approach has made the show stale. With a generous TV contract up for renewal and sinking ratings, Apple must face facts and make a change, or GRW is done. Reluctantly, he turns to Shane in hopes of finding an audience again. But can Shane save GRW while juggling interference from Apple and dealing with the antics of the larger-than-life personalities on the roster?
